Ecco turns leather waste into high-value footwear innovation

Ecco turns leather waste into high-value footwear innovation

Figure: Circular footwear moves forward with the Ecco and Spinnova launch.

Footwear innovation is entering a new phase as circular materials move from concept to commercial reality. Denmark-based ECCO, in partnership with Finnish fiber innovator Spinnova, has launched a limited-edition shoe that integrates textile fiber derived from leather production waste. The development signals a growing push within the global footwear industry to unlock value from industrial byproducts while reducing environmental impact
The newly introduced Biom 720 model uses fiber developed through Respin, a joint venture formed in 2020 between ECCO, Spinnova, and leather supplier KT Trading. This collaboration focuses on transforming leather offcuts and waste into spinnable textile fiber, offering a new pathway for circularity in a sector traditionally reliant on resource-intensive materials.
The innovation addresses a critical industry challenge. Leather production generates significant volumes of waste that often remain underutilized. By converting this waste into textile fibre, the Respin process not only reduces landfill dependency but also creates an additional revenue stream from existing raw materials. According to industry analysts, such material innovation is essential as brands face increasing pressure to decarbonize and adopt circular business models.
ECCO's move reflects a broader strategic shift where footwear brands are investing in material science to gain long-term sustainability advantages. Unlike synthetic recycling, which often depends on complex chemical processes, Spinnova's technology is known for minimizing harmful solvents and reducing water consumption, making it attractive for scalable, sustainable production.
According to sustainability reports across the apparel sector, demand for recycled and low-impact materials continues to rise, especially in premium and performance segments.
While still at an early stage, the ECCO and Spinnova collaboration sets a strong precedent. It moves circular innovation beyond pilot projects and into the marketplace, even if at a limited scale. The next challenge will be scaling this model efficiently and making such materials commercially viable for mainstream production.
